Pump Station Art Campaign
Pump stations are not the most attractive buildings for different reasons, but the Wairoa District Council wanted to change the image of these little square buildings, and decided to collaborate with a local artist. I was brought on board to create a brief campaign which was to roll out on social media and through printed materials.

The Brief
There are a number of little green buildings located around the Wairoa township, these are pump stations and are part of the Wairoa District Council's wastewater system. One pump station's location is exceptionally unfortunate - right next to the brand new playground. Local artist Kerry offered the council to help "spruce up" the pump station by freeing up three of her art pieces. They decided that the local kids should choose their favourite piece, which would be wrapped around the playground's pump station. That's where I came in.
A Uniek Solution
As this campaign was focussed on kids of all ages, the client and I decided that voting should be available both online and at the Wairoa Library (a place Wairoa kids often visit). We printed out large images of Kerry's three artworks for viewing and voting purposes. For the online portion of the campaign I created a new webpage on the council's website, showcasing all information as well as an online voting form. Kids and caregivers could also share their votes through the Facebook campaign.
For the campaign's collateral I decided to combine all three artworks into one design. The main theme was nature and wildlife, so I decided to take one animal of each artwork (the Fantail, the Inanga and the Whale) and use colourful vegetation to tie
them together.
The campaign was a huge success, we received great feedback and hundreds of votes. And now the winning artwork is beautifully wrapped around the pump station for all kids to enjoy!
